Change to console breaks xv video-out

I'm using kernel 2.6.10 (anyways, I had this problem with 2.6.9, too) with vesafb (at 1024x768) and X.org 6.8.1.901 (but iirc I also had the problem with the version before). At fresh bootup and change into X, mplayer plays fine with xv video output. When I change to a console while X runs and change back, I can't use xv-out anymor: I just see a slightly bigger (in vertical) black mplayer-out and just a black screen when I try fullscreen mode. x11 as video-out mode runs fine. This doesn't seem to be a problem with mplayer, as gxine for example shows the same crappy output with xv-output. The problem stays until I restart X.
