I can't post right now my xorg.conf file, but it was working dandy two days ago, yesterday I updated the nvidia video drivers using emerge -deep --update world, and today, X won't start.
The relevant EE line:
(EE) NVIDIA(0) Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module
which expectedly causes the "Screen founds, but none have a usable configuration"
So I checked that the module would load:
'modprobe nvidia' returns a lovely:
FATAL: Error insterting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.9-gentoo-r1/video/nvidia.ko): Invalid module format.
As you can see, I'm using kernel 2.6.9 (most likely last compiled on r1), on an AMD64.
Any help? Telling me to use the 2.6.10 kernel is a "nay", it's masked (amd64), and I shouldn't need it if the nvidia packages (nvidia-kernel, nvidia-glx and the emulation package) are marked as stable. |

You could try:
Code: | su -
modules -r nvidia
emerge nvidia-kernel
modules-update
modprobe nvidia
startx |
I don't know if this will help or not, but its worth a try, allso make sure /usr/src/linux points to the right kernel sourcetree! |

Recompiled using 2.6.9-r14, with /usr/src/linux pointing to it, I can now start X and load kde fine.
However, my fbsplash'ed console logins are now completely unusable. If I switch to them, all I get is a white screen, that little by little turns to white with colored bars.
Edit: rollback to 6111. I'm tired of fighting against these dumb drivers, and I don't see any performance change, so it's not worth the trouble. |
