|

I currently run a Gentoo stage 3 install. I am pretty satisfied with it, but I am convinced that I can further tweak some of the settings if I re-installed from stage 1. My problem is that I want to preserve my /home directories(which are on a seperate partition) and convert everything over to XFS or ReiserFS(haven't decided which yet). Would I be able to convert my /home partition(as well as the rest, except /boot) over to one of those filesystems with no data loss? Would it be possible to do a stage 1 install while the system is still in operation? Where would I start? I assume I should start by backing up my home partition first? |

I don't know of any way to convert a partition (happy to be proved wrong BTW).
Why in hell would you even think of screwing with partitions without backing up first. No ifs, no buts.
BACKUP
Go create some new partitions.
Make (as in mk.....) means FORMAT. Format means NO DATA
But you knew that last bit already.
As for stage 1, I'm yet to be convinced. Set up your USE flags and do Code: | emerge -e system && emerge -e world. |
How much better can you make it ???. |

So I guess in other words, I would be better off just starting over from scratch? Im not worried about the system files, Im mainly concerned with what small bit of data I have on /home, but I can just move what I need to off of there and start over. Just wasn't sure if this was going to be easier said than done. |
