Been using gentoo for about 2 years now.. I was wondering what the different profiles actually are.. i know it is just a symbolic link.. what kind of effect does it have on the system?? i'm not sure i understand what they actually do.. i just keep changing them when a new one comes out... |

Hi,
From what I understand the profile is the layout and contents of the gentoo base system. When a profile changes majorly, this is the only cause to ever really need to upgrade gentoo, other than the normal merge --sync and emerge world.
I believe the last major profile change was from 1.4 to 2004.x.
