This is really a dumb question. I'm just trying to get my modem to work. My modem: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02). Where exactly do I find the driver for this under networking in the kernel config? |

Probably in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/drivers/net somewhere. If you're using a genkernel-generated kernel and it's detected the modem (check under lspci), your kernel should autoload the appropriate driver. _________________ Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop, 1.7 mHz Celeron M, 100 Gb hard disk, 512 Mb RAM, 2006.0, 2.6.16-r7 kernel

I didn't use genkernel. If I have the driver built into the kernel, shouldn't /dev/modem exist? |

I think the problem is that modem is a so-called winmodem; its chipset was designed specifically to work with Micro$oft. slmodem (which you can emerge) *might* be a workaround for this. Also, visit http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/ for more info. Hope this helps! _________________ Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop, 1.7 mHz Celeron M, 100 Gb hard disk, 512 Mb RAM, 2006.0, 2.6.16-r7 kernel

If you're using a 2.6 kernel, the kernel config options are in Device Drivers > Sound > Advanced Linux Sound Architecture and then in the respective sections (PCI,ISA etc).
I posted a wiki entry http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_slmodem to use slmodem, if you do need to use it, it's all explained there. But if it is a winmodem, you probably will need it. |
