I've been playing around with routing on a computer set up as a server/router, trying to sort out a setup with two ethernet cards, one for the local network, the other conected to the internet via an ADSL modem.
I'm trying to understand better how to do this the Gentoo way (I already have it working on a Suse-based machine, but I'm having trouble tranferring the setup to the new Gentoo-based server).
My questions at this point are
1. Where in the /etc/init.d scripts are the interfaces and routing set up? I see some of the information in /etc/conf.d/net, but it is not clear which other scripts are using this information?
2. I find a script /etc/init.d/net.eth0, but there is no net.eth1. Can this be created automatically? If there is no /etc/init.d/net.eth1, how is eth1 set up?
3. If I want to clear the routing table and start over, can this be done using the standard scripts?
4. The rp-pppoe startup script (which works fine for me) sets up a default route via the eth1 interface and the ADSL modem. Does this conflict with the routing set up via the normal Gentoo scripts?
I have searched the Gentoo documentation and forums, but although there is a great deal of information in the forums I haven't found any explanation of the way the Gentoo scripts work.

Scrap this question, I just found the answer in the main Gentoo install guide. It seems that net.eth1 is just a copy of net.eth0.
I'm still interested in the other questions...
