Help! I've been wracking my brain for a couple of weeks now with this problem. I have a new Gibabyte montherboard with built-in audio (intel8x0-based). To start with, audio does work. I have all the system sounds working, and I can play MP3s and OGGs to my heart's content.
What I can't do is launch jackd. It complains about the driver. First I got this:
Code: | bash-2.05b# jackd -d alsa hw:0
jackd 0.98.1
Copyright 2001-2003 Paul Davis and others.
jackd comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY

loading driver ..
creating alsa driver ... hw:0|hw:0|1024|2|48000|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|32bit
control device hw:0
configuring for 48000Hz, period = 1024 frames, buffer = 2 periods
Couldn't open hw:0 for 32bit samples trying 24bit instead

And there's where it stops trying. I never get a command prompt back, nor do I get any errors.
Then when I try another recommended command, here's what comes up:
Code: | bash-2.05b# jackd -v -d alsa -d intel8x0 -p 512
getting driver descriptor from /usr/lib/jack/jack_dummy.so
getting driver descriptor from /usr/lib/jack/jack_oss.so

So the device name I used to set up ALSA completely throws JACK for a loop.
BTW, I'm using kernel 2.4, and ALSA loads as a module, which has never given me trouble. And I had pretty much the same trouble with my old motherboard, which didn't have built-in audio, so I was using a SoundBlaster 128.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. _________________ "In retrospect, everything is funny."

1) Update Jack and ALSA
2) Seriously consider moving to a 2.6 based kernel (2.6.10 is a very solid kernel)
3) Try starting jackd in 16 bit mode _________________ "...as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously." -Benjamin Franklin |
