right... this is really weird...:

my wireless card works fine... for a while. i can browse the net, network etc, however something happens (possibly a dropped packet or something like that) and i stop receiving information to my wireless card.

all i have to do is type into a terminal:
Code:
iwconfig eth1 frag 256

and then if it happens again i type in:
Code:
iwconfig eth1 frag 350

im very new to linux and i dont even know how to write scripts but if no body can think of why this is happenning then is it possible for someone to write me a script that i can load so that if, say, i cant ping my AP, then it changes the "frag" option to a random number between 256 and 2048?

cheers people!!!

Ola !

What you firt of all can try is look if there is any APM suff working on the card/PCMCIA bus. It may cause your card to "fall asleep' after a timeout.

Do you see anything in your /var/log/messages file when the connection is gone ?

Did you install net-wireless/wireless-tools so you can see a bit more what is going on ?

A script... humm :
You can make a crontab entry "crontab -e" and set it like every 15 mins...

Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeets

Aloha !

APM is the Advanced Power Management that resides in most computers.
With APM you can control the way your machine consumes it's power.

For example : if you don't use your HD for like 10 mins, you can have it shut down.

Now I know for a fact that some older or less popular hardware can't 100% handle this APM stuff causing errors and leaving devices turned off or at least render them helpless....
It could be your divice has that trouble ? And With device I not only mean your PCMCIA card itself, I also mean the PCMCIA Bus...

Anyway, sin'ce you posted so little data I just start guessing in this corner. Maybe I'm completely off but we'll see

It may be that your router is working on a buggy long preamble and disconnects cards when it gets flooded with packets. This has happened to me, and regular use seemed to disconnect me at random intervals (I blame the cheap router). Try setting your router to short preambles, it may solve the problem.

Hope that helps.

i gave up...

the power management sounds quite feasable. i think maybe that the API was turning off the cardbus...

anyway, im trying out Ubuntu Linux... http://www.ubuntulinux.org.

its quite good. everything worked straight 'out of the box' except for the wireless of course as i had to alter a config file but now it works fine and doesnt even cut out...

i hope all goes well in the long run...
