|
|
i'm using gentoo on AMD64, and i just tried to install the nvidia video driver set (-glx and -kernel) from packages. i have my kernel settings set as required in the nVidia doc, and i set up X and all that stuff as the instructions say. it modprobed alright, but when i restarted X, it died. i had to do a hard power off and turn my computer back on. but then during the boot process, it went about half way and then halted... with a bunch of code barfed on the screen. the only thing i could make out is something about something being tainted. no clue.
soooo, i popped in my live CD, chrooted in and took the nvidia driver out of the line-up. module-update, blah blah blah.... reboot. comes back up, i unmerge the nVidia crap. now i originally had some funky CFLAGS, so i throttled back down to "-march=k8 -O2 -pipe", and tried again. same result.
anyone have any clue? i couldn't even begin to figure out what went wrong at this point. i'm just hoping someone had the same problem and happens to have pearl of wisdom they'd like to share. otherwise i'm going to do another clean up and go back to the stock drivers. i can do that, but don't want to. |

ok, this is majorly fouled up. i commented out "nvidia" and did a modules-update, and now it still barfs at boot. i did the same with asla stuff (because that was reporting problems earlier), and that didn't fix it either.
i'm stuck. sigh i guess i'll be reinstalling again |

Is your kernel configured right to use modules? Stupid question I know but... you never know. _________________ My blog
