I just realised something strange with my system. I have installed sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.21 on my system and linux26-headers isn't even installed. The thing is, I've never had a 2.4 kernel on this system. I'm assuming this is probably a bad thing so I'm planning on removing the 2.4 headers and installing the 2.6 headers. I've read some other posts but I want to clarify what I'm doing is correct.
I did an emerge -Dupvt --newuse world, and this is the part concerning the headers.
Code: | [nomerge ] sys-apps/man-pages-1.70
[nomerge ] sys-apps/man-1.5m-r2 -debug +nls
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/cronbase-0.3.1 [0.2.1-r3] 0 kB
[nomerge ] sys-apps/sed-4.0.9 -bootstrap -build -debug +nls -static
[nomerge ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1 -build -debug -erandom -hardened -multilib +nls -nptl -pic -userlocales
[nomerge ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.9.4-r6 -bootstrap -build -debug -livecd (-selinux) -static (-uclibc)
[ebuild R ] sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.21-r1 -build* 27,864 kB |
I'm not sure why any of these packages want to install the 2.4 headers. Is there something going on here I don't see?
I've heard after doing such a change I should re-emerge glibc, so this is what I'm planning on doing.
Code: | emerge -C sys-kernel/linux-headers
emerge sys-kernel/linux26-headers
emerge glibc |
Is this all I need to do to make this change?
Is there any chance some package really want the 2.4 headers?
Is this bad? |

You need the 2.6 headers to use the nptl-thread support. NPTL replaces pthreads, it will mean more efficient memory managment (correct me if I'm wrong).
According to me all packages wprk with the newer 2.6 headers (but not all with the nptl support), so yes it's safe to remove them!
