On the LiveCD there is a mighty fine PDF version of the installation guide. As a writer I am always interested in the techniques people use to provide information in written form.

I would like to know exactly what application was used to produce the Installation Manual in the first place, and if that original document, prior to conversion to PDF, is available to the public?

Thanks

You can also view it in html format at:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
As for the source, it's made in XML, and you can find it on the Gentoo cvs

Excellent, thanks. I knew the original source was likely XML (since that is indicated in the footer of the pdf version on the LiveCD), but all links pertaining to that /draft/ through google failed.

Thanks for the CVS link. That is just what I was looking for.

I know that there is a copy of the installation documentation on the LiveCD but I either print it out or read it from another computer while I am installing Gentoo... :)

I copied the pdf over to a thumb drive and then accessed that on a different laptop when installing Gentoo on my primary laptop a while back. I'm kind of a pdf junkie. I'll often look for that format above anything else when possible. My online resume is only available in pdf in fact. I got tired of people complaining my resume looked like crap when viewed in so many different readers for Word and OOo. So I just format it the way I expect it to be presentable and then convert to pdf so I _know_ everyone that views it will see it exactly as intended.

Sorry, that was off topic. Anyway, the pdf version of the Gentoo Installation guide has been on the live CD only since 2004.3 I believe. I do love how it is formatted though. Take a look sometime.

i've looked at the PDF. it sure is pretty, but the fonts are so darned big that it looks like the document was designed for the visually impaired. i'd prefer a document that uses smaller type and fits on half as many pages.

on an unrelated subject, where is the 2004.3 Live CD's framebuffer graphic stored, in the squashed file? how can i extract it?
