It seems to work fine for some people. I think it also depends on which of the two radeon framebuffer drivers you're using. IIRC, the older one is more likely to work.

Drivers run fine. No faster, no slower, although I'm now on X.org 6.8.0 instead of 6.7.0, so that's something. Framebuffer (using vesa-tng) works fantastic.

One wierd thing: Under 6.7.0/the last drivers, I had to have DRI support compiled into my kernel to get 3D Acceleration (I know every guide tells you to turn it off; it was frustrating, but after many recompiling tests, I conclusively proved that on my 9800 Pro 3D Acceleration worked with DRI and didn't work without it. Direct causal relationship). Under 6.8.0/the latest drivers, I didn't have 3D Acceleration until I recompiled the kernel without the DRI. So I guess that it's back to "normal" for me.

Oh well, at least they proved that they can give accuarate dates. Now I just want my Windows speeds, dangit! If I had known this I would have gotten a 5900XT.

Quick question: Is the build on portage or not? I did emerge --sync and then searched for ati-drivers, and it just gives me the old ones. I then searched for the version number and still didn't find them I'm still getting used to portage and everything so I might just be missing it. I am really looking forward to installing these!

Ok, read the thread, decided it looked good, re-synced and emerged ati-drivers. I removed the xorg clamp from package.mask. Worked perfect right out of the box. Just one problem I hope someone can help me with. Seems when I 'emerge -up --deep world', emerge wants to downgrade both the new Xorg and ati-drivers. I still have the old ati-drivers-extras installed because the new version of that isn't out yet (or at least not in portage). Is that the problem? Anybody got any ideas?

Ok, I retract my last post...Since the time I emerged ati-drivers this morning and now, they've changed to mask on ati-drivers from stable "+86" to unstable "~x86" and they've since added ati-drivers-extra as unstable on x86. Time to re-sync and try again.

LoL, too "bad" i bought a Nvidia 5200 over the weekend. Had some extra money, and thought if these drivers werent up to par then i would switch. O well, Sorry ATI, youve lost yet another customer. Another to add to the thousands you have already lost. Even though they came out with this driver (and it is pretty good) , who knows when the next release will be: a month, 2 months, 6 months, another year? I cannot wait this long just to play Unreal or Enemy Territory, it is not humanely possible. That is why i bought the nVidia Card.

Just my 2cents

Okay, I think I emerged them properly, but I'm having some issues installing them. First, when I run fglrxconfig it lists the supported boards and the x700 isn't listed. It doesn't seem to have updated the fglrx thing, and it can't find my board. I know it's supported by the drivers, so what do I need to do?

Ok, running amd64, when I try to emerge ati-drivers(yes i have keywords ~amd64) I get:

and when i run 'ebuild ati-drivers-8.8.25.ebuild digest':

It appears that the mm-sources have got a different interface for the AGP stuff. (missing parameters and such).

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a kernel that has Reiser4 support?

The drivers work really good on my system. I've noticed some speed improvements (still haven't tested Doom3, will do in a jiffy), but UT2004 runs much faster now. Also, I don't really miss DAMAGE and COMPOSITE, since they are pretty much in development and won't be ready before XOrg 6.9. So far, so good.

the drivers sure did'nt change a lot for me. as stated before my FPS in glxgears dropped to 50 !!
i hoped to get at least transparency working, but it scrambles up my entire screen.
one strange thing do: adding the options for transparency resulted in a higher FPS: somewhere around 180
i started tweaking xorg.conf a bit, based on my previous file (although that was meant for the kernel built in radeon driver) don't know whether these extra options do something. i do get the error starting glxgears
Code:
Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

i don't know what to do with that remark
basically: if someone knows how you can tweak your xorg.conf so i get that driver running smoothly... otherwise it's back to the kernel driver!

greetz,

I'm missing gl.h, glx.h and glxtokens.h from /usr/lib/opengl/global/include with the new drivers. The symlinks in /usr/X11R6/include/GL are invalid. Can anyone else confirm this?

@wimbo: have you tried using fglrxconfig to create a config file? The composite extension isn't properly supported by the drivers, so it's not really worth trying to use it, and it will also disable 3D acceleration if you do turn it on. The glxgears error is just saying that 3D acceleration isn't working.

@Parmus: I only have glext.h in /usr/lib/opengl/global/include, but the symlinks in /usr/X11R6/include/GL are valid (they end up in /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/include).

ah... errm,... yes indeed.
but i did create xorg.conf with fglrxconfig. got rid of the composite. i have 3d now, but it's a big laugh. 50FPS in glxgears and just a black screen in chromium and tuxracer isn't my idea of 3D!

Do you have any errors in your Xorg log? (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) Is the fglrx module loading correctly?

@Parmus: does running opengl-update ati or opengl-update xorg-x11 make any difference?

Yes

opengl-update xorg-x11 sets to symlinks to /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/include
opengl-update ati sets to symlinks to /usr/lib/opengl/global/include

I've filled a bugreport and the problem is clearly that ati-drivers don't provide the opengl header files. This is easily solved by symlinking to the xorg-x11 header files, but whether this should be solved in opengl-update or in the ati-drivers ebuild is still unclear.

Well, it depends what they are warnings about :) Can you post the log?

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro.
Well, Xorg 6.8.1.902 works fine here. No error in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

ENEMY-TERRITORY: Works and I get high FPS using 1280x1024 Highest quality. I'm also having graphical glitches problems with triangles appearing random on the screen sometimes.

DOOM3-DEMO: Crashed on me a couple of times when trying "High" and "Very High" quality settings. Didn't crash using "low" but even then, I had low FPS.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT (using Cedega): Playable. Cedega crashes when changing resolutions or video settings in-game. Sometimes the game just hang after entering the world. I haven't tried the mini-map fix and such yet....

I tried http://www.humus.ca GLSL demos, they work great without any problems, even Fullscreen at highest resolution I get high FPS.

COMPOSITE: Enabling composite disables DRI. Using xcompmgr to enable eye-candy stuff makes my KDE 3.4 go crazy, background is all black, windows do not redraw correctly. Using transset to set transparency doesn't work here on KDE 3.4.

That's about it, I wanted to test Half-Life 2 using Cedega but I couldn't get it to install (got an error from the Windows Installer).

New drivers are a ++ here, but I can't wait to see what's next. Bugfixes, performance, compatibility.

Thanks ATI, you made me believe again :)
