Is there any simple program that can record from the mic-input of my soundcard directly to a mp3-file on the harddrive? _________________ //Nimo |

You can get a kind of 'direct' recording by combining the use of 'rec' and 'lame' programs. |

MP3 is a very lossy format, recording directly to MP3 would result in files that sound like they were recorded on a MiniDisc.
You should always record directly to the highest-quality lossless format available, usually .wav
That way, you can make multiple compressed copies at different compression rates from the original. |

It doesn't have to be directly as in "on the fly" , what I'm looking for I something simple where I set the mp3-encoder settings and filename and then just pressing something like "Go"
...and then will the program first record it to .wav (or something similar) and then let lame encode it.
Hmm...like a simple .wav-recorder but one more button you can press afterward to encode the .wav to an mp3, and then a button to combine the two others (I think you get what I mean)
If there isn't something like this, can you recommend any simple wav-recorder (gtk or shell)?

Yes, I'm interested in some sort of simple sound recorder too. Gnome-sound-recorder has never worked for me... looks like I'll have to blow the dust off my windows partition...

There is this very simple application package: Sound Studio, which might be helpful. It is basically a gui-frontend to the powerful sox command.

I hope it works. I couldn't get sox configured properly, it was too confusing. I tried various things in .asoundrc and nothing seemed to work. I hope Sound Studio has some sort of configuration wizard...

it does work and the frontend is very simple and yet covers a whole list of functions. It also has a very good help manual. and typically u just need to specify the source and start recording |
