I am fighting with this problem for a couple of days. I can't change my kaymap to polish and to any other!!! Neither kde nor gnome doesn't work. On kde when i try to change the keymap it displays an error in a tray icon. In xorgcfg can't load any other keyboard than generic 101 with us english layout. I have the latest xorg from portage. Please halp me cause can't really work without polish characters 
There is also something like this whean i leave Xwindow:

I have the same problem when I try to switch to a Korean Layout.. This is getting old....
