gallery not allowing pdfs

From all that I can gleen from the gallery forums it should allow me to upload PDF files. When I try to upload a PDF file it says that the format is not supported. php has pdflibs in the USE flags so am I missing something, or do I have to do something outside of portage to get this to work?

I'm using the latest php and gallery and keep my gentoo up to date with the stable stuff. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Gallery 1.4 does not support PDFs but Gallery 2.0 does. Gallery 2.0 is still in development.
