I have been playing with screen the past couple days and so far like what I see. However, I would like to be able to split a terminal horizontally (i.e., multiple regions side-by-side) as well as vertically. Anyone know how to do this? Is there a similar program that offers this ability?

Yeap, I'd like to know how to do it.
According to their mailing list (here), it seems that this feature is enabled since screen-4.01.
I have version 4.0.3 and I don't see any reference to this in the man page.
Moreover, on this website they provide a patch to do it... but for version 4.01.
Any news above these? _________________ How does a UNIX expert have sex?

I would like it, too. On tty with frame buffer on a wide screen i have a lot of free space on the right side. And sometimes it is difficult to catch the right line if something is printed at the end of a line, like: rc-status -a. |

You can split screen horizontally with Ctrl-a-S (aware of the capital!)
You can find that information in the info pages for screen - especially the section called "Regions" ...

PS: I prefer app-text/pinfo to advise both info- *and* man-pages |

there was a patch for screen to have vertical splitting, I gave the link somewhere in the forums. I don't know if it's still up to date though :/ _________________ The End of the Internet! |

Actually, what the first poster meant, and if he didn't, what I meant was to split the screen also vertically.
I know that <CTRL>-a + S will split it horizontally, but is there a way to do that vertically.
Like this:
Code: | +--------------------+-----------+
| | |
| | |
+--------------------+ |
| | |
| | |
+--------------------+-----------+ |
Thanks for your help _________________ How does a UNIX expert have sex?

Well - as already said in this thread:
* the OP asked for horizontal splitting which is achieved by CTRL-a-S
* you can get vertical splitting via a patch which is mentioned in the forums and most likely at bugs.gentoo.org. Go look for it
