|
|
Alright, basics:
Proliant 6500, 2.25 GB RAM, RAID 1 and RAID 5, 4 Pentium (SOMETHING) processors. I did a stage 3 install, as it's my first "hard" linux install (I won't count mandrake or debian). Here's the problem: when booting from the liveCD, it *seems* to detect all four processors. After completing the install, cat /proc/cpuinfo shows only one. BIOS and the former windows NT install both show 4 processors with no problems. The second part of this dilemma is these are not exactly known. The sticker on the box claims the processors are Pentium Pro, while the BIOS claims they are Pentium IIs, and I believe the processors themselves are labeled as PIIs... would this impact the lack of SMP support? Any advice besides reconfiguring and recompiling the kernel? |

No, this should be mainly kernel-related. Are you certain that the kernel has SMP support in it? |

A quick Google leads me back to the forums, specifically:
Quote: | for the quad cpu's to get recognized, i had to change the operating system in the bios from "Other" to "Unix/Linux".

So now you know

Yes, that's why he probably mentioned that the LiveCD did seem to find the four CPUs, but when he finished his installation he only found one. So I gathered: hey, if the LiveCD kernel finds them, but his own kernel doesn't, then it's the kernel's configuration... |

Okay, that's certainly true (and a little point I missed completely when I read his post...), but I find it hard to believe he has a ridiculously expensive box sitting around and yet would not enable SMP in the kernel config for it _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Excellent tip about changing to Unix... but as far as SMP goes, is there any way I can check kernel options before I recompile it? |

Easily! Code: | cd /usr/src/linux && make menuconfig | Configure your kernel to your hearts content. Alternatively, you can do a Code: | genkernel --menuconfig all | to have a genkernel (kernel) that you can add options to. _________________ no software patents in europe! | adopt an unanswered post. |

You will want to open /usr/src/linux/.config in a text editor. |

Well, as it happens, all I had to do was change that bios setting. Unfortunately, the only way to clear the BIOS is to clear the whole thing... so off I go again from scratch! At least I'll have harnessed the full processing power of this ancient beast. |

Thats not true!
The Proliant Servers all ship with a SmartStart CD that contains the tools to setup and configure the bios. All you need to do is load the System Configuration Utility (SCU), put it in advanced mode (ctrl-A) and reset the system type. This will update the bios so you don't have to start over.
If you decide to start over I highly recommend that you let SmartStart make and populate the utilities partition on your boot drive. You can configure Grub and Lilo so they are an option at boot time (instead of hunting for the CD) |
