I've been happily using openoffice-bin for a couple of months, then decided to switch to a source version in the hope of a minor speed increase. I chose openoffice-ximian because it looked pretty. :)

It's mostly working well, but is noticably slower than the -bin version. In particular, dialog boxes (do you call those widgets?) are super-slow. If I go into Tools -> Options and move from one category to another, it takes about a full second -- I can actually see the dialog box redrawing.

I haven't seen any similar slowdown in any other apps. Why is OpenOffice so slow?

Hardware: AMD64 2800+, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9600Pro.
Software: Gentoo x86 arch, Gnome, Xorg 6.7.0-r2.

Have you gotten this issue resolved? My system crashed recently and I used to run OpenOffice compiled flawlessly...and now, for some reason, I am getting this extremely slow dialog problem too...

I have, but unfortunately I fixed it through Random Fooling Around (tm) -- I'm not sure what I did. Sorry! :(

Those guys know what they're doing with the OpenOffice-bin packages - They're blazingly fast. Also, the Ximian packages have a lot of extra stuff thrown in, which would slow them down. I'd stick to bin or emerge the regular openoffice.

Openoffice-ximian 1.3.7 on my fairly "old" P4 is reasonable fast
and very responsive. You might want to try to remove thee OO directories in ~ and re-run the setup if you experience slowing down.

I just downloaded and installed the Openoffice.org 2.0 preview (m69).
It works fine so far, if somewhat slow, but the real showstopper is, that I'm unable to save. The message I get instead of a saved file reads like this.

Error saving document Untitled1:
Action not supported.
This operation is not supported on this operating system.

Has anyone seen this?

TIA,

Ingo
