Well I've been here a year longer than you and haven't either. Aren't Linux users too scary to meet them IRL? _________________ X3JA | ALEX |

Hmmmm, Telehouse eh Depending on cost we could host our own server and rsync mirror instead of going through a ISP ... PM me with the ISP @ Telehouse and we can start some communication with them. |

I think I beat you by 3 months and 6 days! Although you beat me a lot on post quantities.
Anyway, let's not make this personal. _________________ X3JA | ALEX |

I'd be interested, I'm in Redhill and London.
I have yet to make it to either lonix or gllug in London though...

I know some perl and PHP. I have made www.z-lan.com using PHP with mysql. So I'm happy to have a go at making any aspect of the site if If needed.
Also I would Like to express a concern i have about forming a UK gentoo user group. I would hate to see UK gentoo users start to use a UK forum for general gentoo problems as i feel it would fragment the community and it would mean that there would be less people to answer questions. This is different to the non-english forums as non-english speaker will not get any useful answers posting in the english gentoo forums.
So in summary (as that probably doesnt make any sense), I think it would be a good idea, perhaps even a Good Idea, that it was stressed that any UK gentoo forums are only for UK related postings and any posts for help should be refered to these forums. |

I'm in Caterham, Surrey. I currently have 2 Gentoo boxes and I am interested in IMAP mail services. I hate pubs and smokey rooms but might want to get together with people interested in promoting GNU Linux/Gentoo locally. I work for a local computer business.
My vote was for gentoo.org.uk; isn't it easier to keep the "uk" at the end? I always steer clear of the mainstream anyway. _________________ Tony |

This is only my opinion.
There seems to be a problem with uk.gentoo.org. It is because the gentoo team is using rsync*.[country-code].gentoo.org as the links for rsync servers around the world. Therefore, for uk.gentoo.org, there might need to be a number of changes in the gentoo project IMO, which might happen, but it seems unlikely. Another possibily is uk.user.gentoo.org, which is quite long.
anyway, i prefer gentoo.org.uk

Hmm,
Looks to me like this topic has gone a bit flat.
Any more UK gentoo users out there? |

Well the poll is fairly conclusive...
I guess uk.gentoo.org it is.
Now we just need to create a site. Until then maybe a uk usergroup on this site should be formed. Anybody agree? Then perhaps forming a LUG. But where to hold meetings. Obviously many people live in London, but its as difficult, and can be as time consuming, to travel there as anywhere else.
So:
A site needs to be created.
An LUG needs to be inorgurated.
A usergroup formed. (yes, I know thats really a LUG in longhand, but a forums one)
A uk irc room. #gentoo_uk
I know there are plenty of LUGs but the whole purpose of them is to provide knowlegeable help. I think that gentoo is a little unique, I love it really, and so a dedicated lug is a nice idea.
The site only really needs forums. I doubt there can be that much UK specific news.
The other issue that came up was burning CDs to get around firewalls...
Could that be organised?
A little summary... and my 2p

Sounds great, I'd be interested having just installed Gentoo for the first time. It went astonishingly well and compliments to all the developers, although getting the system localised to proper English took a bit a fiddling and a couple of things are still not sorted out yet.
I'm based in the Cambridge area. |

I noticed in the weekly news that other countries/cities are arranging meetings. Maybe its time we caught on. Our profile could be raised a notch. I know thats not what its really about, but even open source guys can have some competitive spirit
So, that leads us to where?
Scotland: Glasgow/Edinburgh
England: London (most people, not totally central), Midlands( More central, fewer people)... anywhere else?

Also, just wondering how webby things are coming along.
We have an address, but how about hosting/web guru to do stuff/volunteers to man it/ any else.
Well, we can meet and discuss it I suppose.
Sorry to creat a new thread but I couldn't change the poll or add a new one to this thread.

I think I will start my own gentoo linux user group
gentoo glasgow.
It will involve going to glasgow unis union (qm/gu - whichever one I'm closest to) and getting wasted - all in the name of linux. hell yeah! |

I'd be interested in coming along for some UK-based munches (meet-ups), preferably in a pub or student union. Nothing too serious.
I know of another #Gentoo regular in Milton keynes, and have seen others around here posting to this thread, so maybe there'd be more interest around here..? |

This has all gone very quiet.
Did anything come of this or is it yet another example of us brits getting bored halfway through a project and giving up? _________________ wibble |
