I want to try out the latest Gentoo but have run out of blank CD-Rs. I have downloaded the ISO and it mounts ok. If I was to extract that to a blank partition is it possible to update grub to boot from it and enter the normal livecd installation ?

It sounds like you may already have a linux system running.

If this is true, then see the Alternate Gentoo Linux Install Guide - also available in other languages off of the main gentoo page under other docs/translations.

Good luck.

I have a friend who wants to do exactly this. The CD image he wants to boot is not a Gentoo livecd, but other than that it's exactly the same. Did you ever get this to work? I can't see why it wouldn't, just treat the partition like a non-MultiBoot OS (like Windows) and chainload it.

Please let me know how it worked out for you. Thanks!

Doug

i didn't think grub could do this? LILO can as far as i know. If you don't want to change completely to LILO, you could have a boot menu on grub which will load LILO with any iso's to be booted on this menu. It has been discussed here before, but couldn't find it this morning when i had a quick look
