PostPosted: Thu Jan 20, 2005 3:23 pm    Post subject: Xorg on ppc64 with ATI Radeon Reply with quote

I have a G5 dp 1.8 powermac (7,3) with an ATI Radeon 9600XT graphics card. I have not been able to get Xorg working. When I use:

Xorg -configure

I get errors (posted below). If I test the server my system crashes. If I do not, the terminal display behaves differently (very slow when switching F1 to F2 etc).

Is anyone using similar setup successfully or know if it is possible or not?

What do errors in output mean? Is it a problem with kernel setup, Xorg, or do I simply need to keep working at making the configuration file manually?

Thanks for any help/experiences that you can offer.

Please post the error messages of your X server when it crashes. That one you provided is from the configuration process.
You can find your X log in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

You can find my working xorg.conf as a starting point (I've a dual 1.8 G5 radeon9600pro 64MB, xorg 6.8.0-r3).

why do you do in your xorg.conf
Code:
Option    "omit xfree86-dga"   # don't initialise the DGA extension

i don't know, maybe that was automagically added during auto-configuration? do you know the meaning of this extension?

Well I've got Xorg running well on Gentoo with my Radeon 7000, but it won't work with OpenBSD.
Which driver do you use in your xorg.conf?

thanks for the help. I used your (jonasfleer) config file and tried to adapt it for my monitor. I found some helpfull information from net about using my monitor ( Apple Cinema Display 20" ). I still cannot get things working, but I think things are much closer. The error messages are:

(EE) Failed to load module "speedo" (module does not exist, 0)

(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/" does not exist.
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module speedo
(WW) RADEON(0): Video BIOS not detected in PCI space!
(WW) RADEON(0): Attempting to read Video BIOS from legacy ISA space!
(WW) RADEON(0): Unrecognized BIOS signature, BIOS data will not be used
(WW) RADEON(0): Video BIOS not detected, using default clock settings!
(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to detect secondary monitor, MergedFB/Clone mode disabled
(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering not yet supported on Radeon 9500 and newer cards

The new bit that I added for my monitor is:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Apple Cinema Display"
VendorName "Apple Inc."
ModelName "Apple Cinema Display 20"
HorizSync 28-90
VertRefresh 43-72
#Option "DPMS"
UseModes "Modes0"
EndSection

Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes0"
ModeLine "1680x1050" 177.05 1680 1752 2112 2256 1050 1052 1064 1090 #72Hz
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "DVIout"
Monitor "Apple Cinema Display"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection

I suspect it is my monitor that is causing the problem. Am I right in understanding that the video card is now being recognized and functioning correctly?

Again, thanks for your time and help.

Are there any more Errors in your Log file (starting with (EE))? You can find it in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Some notes regarding your posted log lines:

  • I have the same error/warnings concerning "speedo", but was too lazy to comment it out yet.
  • I have the same warnings concerning video bios, that doesn't seem to be the problem.
  • To use mergedFB does not make sense with your gfx card, as i said it in another thread. The warning concerning Direct rendering is related to that point.

Try to add some more Modes, as 1680x1050 is an exotic. Maybe that's the problem.

No, there are not any other errors in the log. I tried googling again and found a discussion in anotherr distro's forum from just a few days ago concerning Xfree86 and the new 20" apple cinema displays. There didn't seem to be any resolution to the problem at this point. I think I just have to hang back and wait for now. At least I seem to have everything else in my configuration file ready to go. Thanks for the help.

jonasfleer: what kernel have you got working with your xorg.conf on your g5 radeon 9600 pro ?

My current kernel 2.6.9-gentoo-r9 work fine with xorg-x11 6.7.0-r3, apple 23" LCD, old model and my xorg.conf, relevant bits, looks like (sorry it's a bit messy)
Code:

Section "Monitor"
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry"
DisplaySize 495 310
HorizSync 30-90
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "1920X1200@60HZ"
Option "DPMS"
VendorName "--> LCD"
VertRefresh 50-70
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection

Section "Device"
BoardName "Unknown"
# BusID "240:16:0"
#Driver "nv"
Driver "ati"
Identifier "Device[0]"
Option "dpms"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
#Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb0"
#Option "FlatPanel"
#Option "CrtcNumber" "0"
#Option "CrtcNumber" "1"
#Option "NvAGP" "1"
#Option "MonitorLayout" "TMDS, TMDS"
Screen 0
VendorName "Unknown"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
# DefaultDepth 8
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
#Depth 8
Modes "1920x1200"
# Modes "1920x1200_old"
# Modes "1280x800_60.00"
EndSubSection
Device "Device[0]"
Identifier "Screen[0]"
Monitor "Monitor[0]"
EndSection

However, linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6 whilst booting, using the same above xorg.conf and radeon framebuffer built into the kernel (as in 2.6.9-gentoo-r9) I get flickering white specs and whilst in X I get flickering also and switching to console (Ctrl-alt-f1) I get a blank screen. I can read stuff at boot up and whilst in X amongst this flickering.

I was wondring if the
Code:
Option "UseFBDev" "true"

is important? I really don't understand why it was there in the first place but the problem I describe with flickering and white specs is what I get in X if I remove that line from xorg.conf with my current setup. As you can see I'm not sure about framebuffer subject.

Also jonasfleer: what relevant kernel configs have you done to to enable the radeon framebuffer.

hi, my current kernel is
Code:
fleer@aith fleer $ uname -a
Linux aith 2.6.9-gentoo-r1 #3 SMP Tue Nov 23 12:51:50 CET 2004 ppc PPC970, altivec supported PowerMac7,2 GNU/Linux

I've not tried to use a newer kernel, because i'm happy that after some problems i finally got linux with X running. And there seemed to be no more advantages with a newer kernel except the coolness factor.

In my kernel config i've activated
Device drivers --> Graphics support --> Support for frame buffer devices
Device drivers --> Graphics support --> Open Firmware frame buffer device support
Device drivers --> Graphics support --> ATI Radeon display support
Device drivers --> Graphics support --> Console display driver support --> Framebuffer console support
Device drivers --> Graphics support --> Logo configuration --> *everything*

As i mentioned in some other post i've commented the entry
Code:
append="video=ofonly"

in my yaboot.conf out to get my dual display configuration working. - Maybe that's a try worth?

Isn't CAN-2004-1235 an issue with the 2.6.9 series and early 2.6.10s? I have never seen it in the Gentoo security advisories, but it does seem to exist (and appropriately patched in some gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10, r4 to be more precise if I remember correctly).

Thanks for the hint, but that issue is no problem for me, as i'm the only user on this system and the vulnerability is only local.
