I recently finished ripping all my CDs to MP3s. I used "rip" (a command-line based ripper) to convert them, mainly because my box at the time didn't have a GUI on it. No big deal, they all ripped fine.

But it got the tag info from freedb.org, and I gotta tell you, that database is in really sad shape. Inconsistent names, inconsistent spellings, etc. I suppose this is to be expected from something that's such a massive colloberation, but still...

I got the directory and file names more-or-less straightened out, but the tags are still all messed up. So I downloaded the freedb database, came up with a schema, and am loading it into PostgreSQL so it will be easier for me to find and clean up the data for my albums.

But before I do anything permanent, I thought I'd see how others organize their stuff, and maybe get some ideas from you guys.

Currently, my directory structure looks like:

ArtistName/AlbumName/The_Name_of _the_Song.mp3

No spaces in the artist or album directory names, which are camel cased. Spaces in the song filenames are replaced with _s. The only characters allowed are alphanumerics, dash (-), and period (.).

I'm considering putting the track number at the front of the mp3 name, so that they'll sort correctly.

How do you organize your collection?

I do Artist/Album/Track# - Song Title.mp3/ogg

For my peer to peer downloads that I don't have in my permanent directory structor, I use artist - album - track #.mpg

I use something like this:
Code:
Artist -  Album/track - title

but since i use muine ("database" organisation like amarok or rhythmbox), the dirctories structure isn't important, the only thing that matters is if all files are correctly tagged.
