Yes, I do have /etc/init.d/alsasound, however, when I run "rc-update add alsa default", it looks for /etc/init.d/alsa, which I do not have. should I just type "rc-update add alsasound default"

The Desktop Guide is horribly out of date - it worked for the 1.0 release candidates but not much after that.

Yes, you should just type "rc-update add alsasound default". rc-update looks for the script in the /etc/init.d/ directory, so you could rename alsasound to foo and do a rc-update add foo default and the alsa stuff would be started.

Cool, that worked! Now I have sound coming out. However, it is only out of 1 of my 4.1 speakers, and it is not good quality at all. How do I fix that? I am guessing with amixer...but I don't know how to use it.

I think you can adjust the sound for all of your channels using alsamixer (type alsamixer at the command line). The portion of the desktop guide on the gentoo site is still valid as far as using amixer and alsamixer go.
