Hi all

I have just finished my kernel to gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.10-r4.
Now I can't get my display working anymore.

I have reemerged nvidia-kernel, and nvidia-glx The modules nvidia and nvidia-agp load without a problem.
But when I want to start the graphical display (startx or kdm) I get an error message and I come back to the console.

In /var/log/messages I get:

IO Error in XOpenDisplay
X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

Does any one know how I could fix this

Any help greatly apreciated

Regards Daniel

well, r5 has been out at least a couple days. I installed it here saturday I think. I passed on r3 & 4, so I don't know if something was up with it or not. anyway, if it just started with that new kernel, I'd go ahead and give r5 a try.

I have exactly the same problem when i switch from gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9 to 2.6.10.
r5 doesn't fix it. :(

Hmmm, strange... I have just recompiled the 2.6.9 kernel, with a minor change (MS filesystems related) in the .config file. And now I have got the same problem with this kernel as well, argh!
I have overwritten the previous 2.6.9 kernel... So now, I have to prevent X from starting somehow, this will take a while for me to fix... :(
It now looks to me that it is not kernel related.

Ok here's what I did:

1) Boot with a Live CD (Suse, Knoppix, whatever.....)
2) Mount the partition with /etc in rw - mode
3) move away the file /etc/init.d/xdm (make sure you'll find it afterwards again e.g. mv /etc/init.d/xdm /etc/xdm.orig
4) reboot your system (it will complain about missing xdm but it will boot anyway --> X won't start anymore
5) login as root and remove x from the init - skripts type:
rc-update del xdm default
now X won't start anymore
6) copy back your xdm - file:
cp /etc/xdm.orig /etc/init.d/xdm
7) now you can boot as you like without X starting

why don't you chroot from the live cd and then rc-update del xdm?
would be much simpler

That's what I tried first but unfortunately for some reason I couldn't read the partition table from my hard disk any more with the live CD.
So I couldn't mount the partitions to chroot

Hi all

I've found the solution (thanks for the hint with Xorg.log)
It seems that with the migration from portage 2004.2 to 2004.3
XFree86 is replaced with Xorg.6.8.
This changed my Xfree86 config File. The critical line is the keyboard dirver:

bash-2.05b# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old |grep -i failed
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(EE) Failed to load module "Keyboard" (module does not exist, 0)
failed to initialize core devices

So I search for an old Version of my config-File and saw that the Keyboard drivers name is 'kbd'

I changed this in the config file and here we go again writing this to you on my upgraded system

Thanks for all the help
CU Daniel

Hi again!

I just found out what was causing my error; X could not find a mouse device.
In a kernel cleanup I had disabled the /dev file system, because it is marked [Obsolete].
And yes... the installation manual of Gentoo says it should be enabled, I forgot about it...
But why is it marked obsolete when it is not :?: :?

Thanks anyway!
