Hi.
I would like to install a new version so that I could take advantage of the -march=pentium-m setting. Consequently that means recompiling everything.

How do I do this?
I've already fetched version GCC 3.4.1. What's next? How do I prevent emerge from "downgrading" to the old version od GCC?

thanks in advance.

regards,
zee

it'll not downgrade, unless gentoo devs think it is necessary.

to recompile everything with the new gcc try this:

Code:
#emerge -e system && emerge -e system && emerge -e world && emerge -e world

as sugested in this post

Hi!
First off, if you just upgraded from gcc-3.3.x, you really don't need to recompile everything, as the performace advantages - if any - will not be noticeable.
But anyway, first list the installed compilers:
Code:
gcc-config -l

The active compiler is marked with an asterisk. To switch active compiler, do
Code:
gcc-config N
env-update
source /etc/profile

where N is the number in front of the compiler you want to use. Now you're set up to use the new compiler and can re-emerge everyting:
Code:
emerge world -e

EDIT: The command line in the post above is for the thoroughly paranoid ;)

It's recompiling. It might take a while. Because it's a notebook we're talking about.

Big thanks to all.
