me and my friend both have a prism based pcmcia wireless card.
when i plug in his card the kernel obediently loades the modules and it all works. when he plugs in my card his computer obediently loads all the SAME modules and it works. NOW when i plug my card into my laptop it hard crashes... right down to the curser stops blinking holding the power button doesn't even do anything, i have to remove the plug from the wall and the battery. the crash is tooo sudden for there to be any logs of the event at least i haven't found any. I've tried putting the card in on boot and it just locks the computer when it brings up the cardmanager.

it uses the following modules in my friends laptop
Yenta-socket
orinoco
orinoco-cs
hermes

my laptop is an old compaq armada 7800 pII 300MHz
I know i have the modules because my friends card works when i plug it in

This card worked under slack 9.1 out of the box and i works under the 2004.2 livecd any help is apreciated

the solution is obvious - swap your cards ! :)

more seriously, I have no experience with the orinocco drivers, did you try hostap ? I always had good results with it (tried several different prism based cards too).

his card is nicer than mine and it certainly wouldn't be a fair trade to him. Isn't hostAP only if you want to run as a access point?

nope, hostap allows you to do so indeed but it works fine in all modes (managed, adhoc or access point).
It will also work great with kismet and the like.
