I was running kde but decided to flip to gnome and it appears to be fubar'd.

I emerged gnome, all went well, no errors at all.

Once the install was complete, I changed my rc.conf to use "gnome" and "gdm" as opposed to the KDE values.

I added famd to default runlevel on boot.

I also changed my .xinitrc file to "exec gnome-session".

Rebooted, and I get the gdm screen, login, and I do not get a gnome-session...instead I get tvm or twm, whatever it's called....

I tried running gnome-session from the prompt and it tells me I'm already running a session.

I also now have a bunch of errors while booting as well that I did not have when I was using KDE such as "error calling unlink in global" while caching service dependencies, and in a couple of other places.

I mostly build and work with "headless" gentoo (and other linux) servers so I'm shooting in the dark on this one. All I could do was follow instructions but that didn't work out so well.

What gives?

Thanks!

EDIT 1:
I killed the xsession and logged in as root, gnome works fine as root...now I just need my primary user to be able to launch a gnome-session, preferably w/o killing the account and creating a new one...

EDIT 2:
If this helps, here's what I found in a file in my home directory called ".xsession-errors":

Code:

/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "vjenks"
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Cannot find Xclients
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- xsm

*bump*

Same boot errors here, in the same situation (recently switched to gnome from kde) on both my machines. I also get "action_compat ..." errors during boot. I have not, however, found any problem in my .xsession-errors file.

My gnome seems to work ok, though. At first nothing worked (of course, this is gentoo, remember  ), but after removing my kde related files from /tmp and my $HOME/.gnome* directories, it starts up and behaves more or less as expected. Perhaps a tad slower than I had hoped for...

Ideas, anyone?
