I have an old computer setup as a gentoo router but the hard drive is too loud for something that just sits there routeing packets, so i issued a hdparm -S 12 command to suspend the drive after a minute of inactivity the only time that the hard drive should spin up is at 1:00 every morning to sync portage. Is this safe for the hard drive? |

Sure it's safe, but it won't work: log buffers get flushed to disk continuously.
Google for noflushd and see what options that gives you.
Oh I'm so nice... http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=noflushd _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /
