Ever since I started using Gentoo I've had this weird problem with when sounds end in certain programs (most noticeably GAIM) there is an annoying popping noise. Well, I started using a different sound card and driver and the problem no longer occurs. The reason this seems to be a driver issue is that while I use a Sound Blaster Live!, my roommate uses an Audigy which both share the emu10k1 driver. He has the same problem. I've seen other people complain about the GAIM popping noise and was just wondering if any other emu10k1 users have had any sort of the same negative experience with it.

I use an Audigy DE card and the same popping sound occurs at the end of short sound files (such as the gaim notifications). I'm using the latest ~x86 version of the alsa packages incase a newer version of the driver comes out that fixes the problem.

That is really strange, because I am using a SoundBlaster Live! card in my movie machine at home.
At work in my main workstation I am using a SoundBlaster Live!... pretty much in any working machine I am running a SoundBlaster Live! card.
One thing I should mention... I am running OSS and not ALSA since I don't really make use of the extra features in ALSA.
Try running OSS... maybe that will fix it!

i would look at probably upgrading my sound drivers (ALSA) to the latest version, sometime it could be hardware related problem but if you both are having problems it's strange.

Since I don't have this problem in windows; I already have the latest alsa drivers (see my previous post); and it appears that this problem does not occur with Audigy 2 cards or SoundBlaster Live! cards. I would say that this is a problem with the emu10k1 driver specific to audigy cards.

Since this is most likely a problem upstream I don't know where a bug report should be filed. Should this be reported on sourceforge?

I suppose before that happens though I would like to see if any other Audigy users don't have this problem and if so what they're config files look like.

Do you use any other audio notifications? I find that there aren't any problems with larger audio files such as mp3's, it's only small audio files. Playing these sounds with aplay also reproduces this problem so it isn't specific to gaim.

Anyone else with an audigy card having this issue?

I use xmms from time to time and it plays without any ill effects. I don't have any other audio notifications set up so the only time I hear short audio is within GAIM.

As this seems to be a problem with the driver I have posted a report in the alsa bugtracking system >> Bug Report

Hopefully I will be told if it's fixable or that it's actually a configuration error.
