are there etc-update logs

I was curious if there is a log for updated config files such as through etc-update.

What i'm wondering is that it seems my 'sshd_config' had Permitrootlogin set to yes when i had it to 'no' and the Access date in the properties puts it around the time that i updated openssh (according to emerge.log) and would just like to confirm that i updated the sshd_config file through etc-update as i can't remember. kinda stupid of me to not pay much attention to what i was updating... although i do to some agree. i'm probably just being overly paranoid as nobody has physical access to my computer but me.

Hi,
i think you are out of luck with etc-update (someone correct me if i am wrong). But if you want this feature in the future , start using dispatch-conf instead of etc-update. It has the ability to archive the config files, and in the recent version it can log changes to config files.

I doubt etc-update has a log, and from what you describe you desire, you are better served by a rcs system on your config files. In fact, rcs was recommended, over etc-update, by some threads in this forum.

If I am more conversant with rcs (or any of its variants), I'd recommend it too. Right now, for me, config files management, aka change management is just a theoretical perfect fit for rcs.

I would be interested in something else also. Not that etc-update is bad, I've just had a few problems that later I could trace back to mostly likely an etc-update I ran, but it would be nice to verify that say two weeks ago I did indeed make a change to file x and that is likely where the problem originated. Just keeps you from chasing wild geese.
