i suggest the ability to have settings for posts shown per topic and topics per forum, i personally like a mile long page than having to hit next page every 10 posts or every 10 topics

Well, I'm no expert on phpBB2, but I can quite quickly come up with a very good reason for them not to: web server load.
The load on both the webserver and mysql server is directly proportional to the amount of information per page, and have you noticed how the forums tend to slug down to snail speed when it's really busy ?
We really don't want any more detriments to the speed of the forms...
It's 25 posts and 50 topics per page, by the way 
EDIT: Personally, I wouldn't mind dropping the number of posts per page to 15 or even 10, since they tend to be long pages as it is.
I don't know what form of output caching the forums use, but the page load times would probably decrease...

Certainly there would be concerns with server load, but I think really one of the key reasons that this hasn't happened is that it doesn't come as a standard feature of phpbb.

That can't be the main reason, since I do know phpBB2 and it is certainly a configurable option.
I recall having read once that any features that are available in phpBB will or can be made available on the forums, but the Gentoo-specific customisations will not likely be adapted to user demands.

I should be more specific. This is only configurable on a serverwide basis and not something that is configurable per account as a part of that account's profile.

This is true for a lot of things, but I suspect that it wouldn't be a problem in this case.

makes sense enough... i can understand the server load issues, and like you said the forums occasionally have a hard enough time loading..
