Working on hardware detection and initrds, please
test http://dev.gentoo.org/~livewire/beta-xx-xx-xxxx.iso
if your having problems with current livecds.

Come on ppl, need some feedback here.
This livecd *should* help with lockups caused by
the module scans (ie, doscsi,dofirewire,etc)
It moves ALL modules into the initrd and also hwsetup/kudzu
into the initrd. If something isnt detected a "gentoo shell"
allows you to modprobe any module available in the kernel.

please report bugs here or livewire@gentoo.org, do not

Hi,
Here's my experience:
I downloaded beta-01-24-2005.iso.
I tried to boot it on a Dell PowerEdge 6350 with an Adaptec 7860 (aic7xxx) and a PERC 2/SC (megaraid) using gentoo doscsi.
It hung after
Code: | Loaded modules ........
e100 mii parport_pc parport usb_storage ehci_hcd usbcore qla1280 dmx31910 aacraid dac960 3w_xxxx a1002w tmscsim megaraid atp870 aha152x buslogic aic7xxx aic79xx
* Mounting the CD |
I rebooted with gentoo shell.
It hung after
Code: | Loaded modules ........
aic7xxx megaraid e100 mii parport_pc parport usb_storage ehci_hcd usbcore
* Mounting the CD |
Next, I rebooted with gentoo nodetect.
It hung after
Code: | ---- Disabling Hardware Detection
* Mounting the CD |

Is this beta supporting/using NPTL (2.6 kernel) natively, or is it still using 2.4 headers?
The reason I ask is, a friend just upgraded his install and said that it was considerably faster, ie; apps not hanging for 15-20 seconds before starting, etc. I'm considering going the same route, but I don't mind testing out new stuff. I've already downloaded the iso, emerging k3b now to burn it. This box is primarily used as a Half-Life server, and that's easy enough to setup again. _________________ http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=16196755 click me for cheap linux based web hosting. |

Jiffy: thanks just fixed the "shell" option.. will work now
(kidna stupid to make it happen after the cdmount), will
look at why its not grabbing your cdrom.
and doscsi should not be used with this livecd, thats just like the old way.
d_adams: its 2.6 kernel, 2.4 headers.. this should
still work for a nptl (chroot) install from what i know.
But you should chekc out nptl good. After probaly a year
of using it i switched to non-nptl.. Tired of some binarie
apps not working (some games,vmware,etc).
The KERNEL_ASSUME wasnt working for me well. |

The beta 1-24-2005. Worked well on my HP NC-8000 detected and loaded modules for the NIC, sound, usb keyboard & mouse, synaptec touchpad and ATI video card. However, it didn't detect the built-in Atheros wireless interface. Not sure about the bluetooth either as I don't have any bluetooth devices so couldn't test that
Let me know if you need-want more detailed info.
Cheers,

Seems like it works ok so far. Loaded pretty much everything on this box, but still get unknown device: Promise raid controller blah blah. It knows what it is, just like my current system, but still shows as unknown in lspci. Pretty sure it got everything else though. This is on a Tyan Tiger MP Athlon board, rev 1.01 (the original version from when it first came out) with a Nvidia geforce 440 mx, Promise Ultra 100tx raid card, Realtek 8139 nic, and C-Media 8738 sound card. Pretty generic box, just a file server/ halflife server. Has a bunch of drives in it, but the raid card is running as a regular ata controller. _________________ http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=16196755 click me for cheap linux based web hosting. |

livewire,
I booted with no boot parameters and got:
Code: | Loaded modules ........
aic7xxx megaraid e100 mii parport_pc parport usb_storage ehci_hcd usbcore
* Mounting the CD
mount: mounting /newroot/dev/cdroms/* on /newroot/mnt/cdrom failed: no such file or directory
---- CD not found
umount /newroot: Device or resource busy.
busybox (snip)
/newroot # |
Then I booted with gentoo shell and got:
Code: | Loaded modules ........
aic7xxx megaraid e100 mii parport_pc parport usb_storage ehci_hcd usbcore
* Mounting the CD
busybox (snip)
/newroot # |
lsmod didn't work, so I couldn't tell if the cdrom modules loaded. or are they just built right into the kernel?
The cdrom is attached to the Adaptec 7860 controller.
What should I try next?
Jiffy
Edit:
Almost forgot, when I typed exit at the prompt, I got the /newroot/mnt/cdrom failed: no such file or directory
error again. |

Tested the beta 1 24 2005 on my desktop PC and it loaded everything fine including Prism54 drivers for my wireless card, SATA HD, firewire & USB keyboard , mouse & card reader.
Nice job Now if it only supported the Atheros wireless chipset it'd be perfect for me.

Jiffy: I dont think i had the proper stuff in first couple livecds
to fallback to /dev/sr0 if a cd wasnt present in /dev/cdroms.
I added some stuff to yesterdays livecd, but dont waste a cdr till i can check it a little closer. Jiffy the good thing is weve
detected both scsi cards without locking up.. the rest is simple.
btw scsi cdrom is built into kernel
Jerrybme: Are those drivers available in vanilla kernel? |

Don't worry about that, I'm using re-writables , but, the notepad I carry back and forth from the server room that I'm using to write down the errors in, may run out of paper. |

I'm running an Adaptec 2960N with Plextor SCSI CD-RW Drive and Seagate Ultra 160 SCSI HDs. Of course, I'm having trouble getting the 2004.3 livecd to boot. It hangs in the same way everyone else's does. But the January 25, 2005, Experimental CD hangs as well. Using:
F2
gentoo shell
the sequence loads all drivers including the critical aic7xxx and poops out with:
*Mounting the CD
mount: Mounting /newroot/dev/cdroms/* on /newroot/mnt/cdrom failed: No such file or directory
umount: /newroot: Device or resource busy
It then goes on to busy box reporting
ssh: can't access tty: job control turned off
/newroot # _
with blinking cursor.
While Gentoo livecds have presented problems in the past for me on this computer, a judicious use of boot parameters or other kind of juking has always gotten things off the ground. Frankly, I'm at a loss to understand why it is that after several years of past successes with it that SCSI hardware is now and continues to be the nemesis of Gentoo's livecds.
Where do things go from here with this problem? From what I can tell the development team has been at work on it for some time without a usable fix. I really don't want to use the KNOPPIX livecd or some doctored previous version of our own and I'm sure that no one wants me to have to do that either.
What's the next step?

On shutdown I get the following error when it's saving device nodes:
Code: |
* the "mv" command failed with the following error
inter device move failed: '/tmp/devices-5046.tar.bz2' to '/lib/udev-state/devices.tar.bz2' unable to remove target: Readonly file system
* since this is a critical task startup cannot continue
|
It's reproducable using the latest livecd. Seems like a simple problem, hope you can fix it. It did a great job of hardware detection though, even got my soundcard, which the 2004.3 cd didn't do. Just put xorg and kde on there and you'll have every n00b out there installing gentoo. _________________ "That question was less stupid; though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way."

jlowell: could you tell me what device your cdrom is
when you drop to shell with the livecd.
The whole point of this livecd was to get the hardware
detection to work with out locking up. Which seems
to be working well. The rest is just getting linuxrc
to mount the proper device (fairly easy, ive just been
tied up for a few days) |

Is there a amd64 version of your beta LiveCD?
I've upgraded my motherboard & processer and the latest amd64 LiveCd doesn't handle my wireless card in my desktop. When I modprobe the prism54 module /var/messages shows it is not loading.
Your beta CD works fine handling my wireless card but chrooting doesn't work since it isn't an amd64 LiveCD.
Cheers,

Glad to hear you've joined the ranks of 64 bit processing Can't wait until I get to join you.

No, unfortunately. But maybe that's because I don't understand what to look for or how to find your answer. Looking in /newroot/dev via the shell there are no references to /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 or anything else that makes sense to me, but the complaint I'm getting indicates that anyway. I saw nothing in the scrolling during bootup that made reference to cdrom either. What should I be doing here? busy box is reasonably limited.

I tried the beta-01-25-2005.iso on an IBM Thinkpad X40 using an
IBM USB 2.0 cd-rom drive with the following boot options:
Code: |
gentoo
gentoo doscsi
gentoo noapic
gentoo doscsi noapic
gentoo noapic ide=nodma
gentoo doscsi noapic ide=nodma
|
and they all have the same result. After properly detecting the network card,
sound card, mouse, and graphics, comes this error
Code: |
* Mounting the CD
mount: Mounting /newroot/dev/cdroms/* on /newroot/mnt/cdrom failed: No such file or directory
---- CD not found
umount: /newroot: Device or resource busy
BusyBox v1.00-pre3 (2005.01.25-17:56+0000) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
ash: can't access tty; job control turned off
/newroot #

Hello, I'm new to Gentoo (but not new to linux/*nix).
I have been reading a bunch of posts regarding the "hanging at tmscsim thing."
My problem is related to this, but not quite the same.
I am not having trouble booting the live CD (IDE DVD-R drive) or installing to a SCSI drive on an IBM ServeRaid 3L.
The problem comes when I try to boot the installation the first time.
It doesn't detect my SCSI controller for some reason.
I tried putting DOSCSI in GRUB, but then it hangs at tmscsim.
BTW, I used genkernel to build the kernel, because the docs said it'll build a kernel like the one on the liveCD (which sees the ServeRaid 3L no problem).
I tried so many times and it's really bugging me now.
Somehow I don't think the beta live cd will solve this, as it seems to be more geared toward SCSI install issues with SCSI CD-ROMs.
Any suggestions? |

Download, OK, Burn Ok. Boot: Wow a splash screen. Oops, hit enter forgot vga=normal.
Code: |
ping -c 1 myisp.com
|
Wow networking works out of the box.
Code: |
fdisk -l /dev/sda ...
|
It found the sata drive!
Code: |
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo
chroot ....
|
Bad exec error. Must not be 64 bit.
Total time (includes coffee), about 20 minutes.
I like it. Passing the ping/fdisk modprobe test was my rite of passage into gentoo.
Sometime in the past couple of years in the linux world vga=normal went in the dust bin along with my eyes ;( |

cogitech,
Suggestions? Yes. I really think you should have avoided genkernel and configured and made your own. Having done many Gentoo installations, all of them stage ones, I'm really quite unfamiliar with genkernel but your symptoms just scream out the need for a build from scratch. Think about doing one.
