Hi!

I've just emerged Gnome and I wanted to start it, but nothing happenend. The first time I started gnome, I did it out of the terminal shell on a remote computer. As I recognized my fault, I started it on the Gentoo computer, but with the result that the screen stays black.

Here's the Xorg.0.log

You need to create/edit your xorg.conf. There are many posts on this topic, and I believe it is also covered in the gentoo docs on setting up a desktop.

Try running "xorgconfig" from a terminal to create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf for your machine...

I used Xorg -configure to create the xorg.conf file, but it tells me:

Xorg is not able to detect your mouse.
Edit the file and correct the Device.

I have a Razer Diamondback USB mouse, which is detected at system start! When I use >cat /dev/input/mice it seems to work.

Nevertheless, the X server should run without the mouse, shouldn't it? But if I start 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new' the screen remains black. :?

Maybe you should search the forums and find out how to set up your mouse section then? I searched "razer usb" and this thread seems to indicate that

Code:
    Identifier  "Mouse1"
    Driver      "mouse"
    Option "Protocol"    "IMPS/2"
    Option "Device"      "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Might work. There are many, many examples of xorg.conf's on the forums, and many posts on getting usb mice working.

Post your current xorg.conf, or rather just the mouse section and we can see whats wrong.

Thank you, Madbiker...

The problem is, that the mouse is recognized at the boot sequence with the 2.4 kernel, but not with the 2.6. I will analyse the different kernel settings with a diff tomorrow. I'll post my result later.

Check the mx700 howto on the forums as well. There are a lot of detailed posts in there about exactly what needs to be in the kernel (pick and choose, everything might not apply to your mouse).

Okay mouse is running. I had to use OHCI instead of UHCI in the kernel options.

So, there's only the "no screens found" problem left.

Any hints?

Problem solved:

It had to be:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
EndSection

Thanks for all help!
