Hello,
I've been rolling along with my gentoo install on my new (to me) ibook G3. I've just got the kernel to boot but cannot get the ethernet card to work. Here's the error on boot.
Code:
ERROR: Problem starting needed services.
       "netmount" was not started.

When I run ifconfig, I get this:
Code:
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found.

The network works great from the Live CD 2004.3 and mentions a Sun GEM card and BCM5221 PHY while booting.

I'm beginning to suspect I've used the wrong kernel. I installed the system from the G3 Live CD, however when I boot from the CD, it runs a G4 kernel called Elf32. Should I be installing a G4 kernel on my G3 system?

Any and all help is appreciated. I feel I have a dream Linux machine, please help me make it so.

It could be simply a matter of trying first a
Code:
modprobe sungem
before the ifconfig. If that does not help, how did you compile your kernel? Make sure you set CONFIG_SUNGEM (as module of built into the kernel) or "Device Drivers -> Networking support -> Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) -> Sun GEM support" in the menu-based kernel config tool.

Well, the modprobe didn't work. I think you're right that the kernel isn't configured correctly. I'll have to go back thru and recompile and see what happens then. Thanks.
