Headrush is absolutely right about it being unlikely that the same LiveCD would give varying performance. I did say the ideas were slightly bizarre - i never said they made sense 8O . They don't make much sense to me, & i know where i'm going with them...

Tell you what - humour me. Try the
Code:
livecd root # mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo

command, & see what happens... What have you got to lose?

He got to the Grub prompt before and tab completion showed his kernel, so if he can't mount it now, we are talking major problems and not just a configuration problem :-(

Good advice taipan67, wasn't meaning to question your ideas or be insulting. :-)

Don't worry, i'm not insulted . I would like to satisfy my own curiosity about whether the filesystem-type makes a difference, though...

The whacky theory is that, in the case of kernels started from an initrd-image (such as those on installation CD's), ext2 is usually built-in, while other filesystems are supported by modules. If an ext2 partition mounts & a reiserfs one doesn't, might the support-module not be activated correctly?

Can you try booting the LiveCD with this option:
Code:
gentoo root=/dev/hda3

and let me know what happens.

I gave up trying to install Gentoo. :(

So... I had someone to do it for me via SSH.

But now I am having problem with install user graphical interface (xorg).

Emerge has failed to download it.

Code:

           => '/usr/portage/distfiles/libpng-1.2.8.tar.bz2'
Resolving belnet.dl.sourceforge.net... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.
!!! Couldn't download libpng-1.2.8.tar.bz2.  Aborting.
root@cygen cyberian # _

What is wrong with Emerge? Its been failing all DLs I am making.

EDIT: Okay, I got Xorg installed. But it would not configure.

Code:

root@cygen cyberian # Xorg -configure
bash: Xorg: command not found

There are a couple of commands for this. I use
Code:
root@cygen cyberian # xorgconfig

...but that requires you to know some things about your hardware:- Which driver your graphics need; What the Horizontal sync & Vertical refresh rate's of your monitor are.

There's another command that try's to do it all for you, but i can't remember it's name, sorry.

Now that you're up & running, you would improve your chances of getting good, quick answers to your questions by starting new topics for these problems. In this case, a new topic in the 'Desktop Environments' forum, called something like 'How to configure xorg?' would attract the attention of people who aren't already watching this topic.

Don't take that as a slap on the wrist - it takes time to learn how to make the best use of the forums  .
