192.168.1.104 or 103 I think.
How do I ping the router?
No, I have not rebooted.
EDIT: IP typo fixed.

That IP address is missing a section. It should be 4 lots of up to 3 numbers. Perhaps you mean 192.168.0.104?
To ping it type:
You should either get a bunch of times back, or it will say that the host is unreachable. Try both of those addresses you think it might be, to check.
BTW, you'll have to hit ctrl and c to stop the ping command. I'm sure there's a way of limiting how many times it pings, but I can't remember it off hand. _________________ My blog

I am getting a:
Code: | 64 byte from 70.50.118.XXX: icmp_seq_=73= ttl=150 time =0.400 ms |
What does this mean?
Also, if I cannot get emerge metalog working, what do I do? |

Means you successfully reached anoth machine and that is the return time.
Trying pinging something by name such as ping www.yahoo.com
If it works, you should be OK.
If it doesn't work, your traffic isn't be routed properly and a default gateway needs to be set or you didn't properlly do the set involving /etc/resolv.conf |

Code: | 64 bytes from p11.www.re2.yahoo.com (68.142.226.42): icmp_seq=50 ttl=52 time=47.5 ms |
This means my connection is working, right? If so, why couldn't emerge metalog be connected? |

Yes your connection seems to be working.
Do any other files download or is it just metalog
You can try using the mirrorselect command to update the mirrors in your /etc/make.conf file. |

After Googling, I found this:
Code: | mirrorselect -a -s4 -o | grep 'GENTOO_MIRRORS=' >> /etc/make.conf |
Is that right?
I got returned with this error:
Code: | bash: mirrorselect: command not found |
EDIT: typo

Is that a type in putting this into the thread, or when you actually typed it? It should be mirrorselect, with the t on the end.
Can you ping www.google.com or something like that? _________________ My blog

Typo.
Yes, the ping for Google works.

Hmm. Odd.
Can you post the URL that the emerge metalog is trying to retrieve? _________________ My blog

Right. I've looked over at the metalog page at sourceforge, and it looks like a new version was released about a week ago, and the old file (the one you're after) is gone. The new version isn't in portage so you can't sync and do it that way.
I have managed to find the file you need at another source. You need to use wget to retrieve it.
Do the following:
Code: |
cd /usr/portage/distfiles
wget http://www.maxtux.co.uk/dist/gentoo/2004.3/x86/cd2/distfiles/metalog-0.8_pre20031130.tar.gz
emerge metalog |
That will download the file to the right location, and then merge it. _________________ My blog

Works fine for me: Code: | root: tux > emerge metalog -f
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) app-admin/metalog-0.8_pre20031130 to /
>>> Downloading http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/metalog-0.8_pre20031130.tar.gz
--10:07:51-- http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/metalog-0.8_pre20031130.tar.gz

Try manually grabbing the file with Code: | wget http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/metalog-0.8_pre20031130.tar.gz |
And then move the file to /usr/portage/distfiles/
emerge metalog should work now. |

1 part says 'failed', another part says 'downloaded'. I am sure what this is suppose to mean.
EDIT:
Tried again with the second method and got this:
Code: |
10:42:22 (84.75KB/s) - 'metalog-0.8_pre20031130.tar.gz' saved [40830/40830] |
So it worked.
Where did it saved to? I need to know so I can move it to '/usr/portage/distfiles/'. |

It saved the file in your current directory ( ./ ). just use mv to move the file from the current directory into /usr/portage/distfiles |

It's telling me cannot move because file or dir doesn't exist. Is this because I am in 'livecd gentoo #'?
If so, how do I get back to where I was, before I came to 'livecd gentoo #' to DL 'metalog'?
EDIT: I did some searching and got this:
Code: | chroot /path/to/system/root /bin/bash |
Is the above right? What am I suppose to replace 'path', 'to', and 'system' with?
Does it have to do with the 'tux' and 'homenetwork' names I have given? |

Did you chroot back into /mnt/gentoo after you downloaded the file? Did you type in the correct filename? Use Tab completion to help you fill in the correct filename (type the first few letters of the filename then hit Tab to have the shell fill in the correct name. if it does not respond after 2 - 3 presses of Tab you're in the wrong directory.).
If you have chroot-ed back into /mnt/gentoo, exit the chroot with exit, try copying the file to /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles instead, then chroot back into /mnt/gentoo to continue installing.
Otherwise, the file should be in the directory you're in right now, provided you have not cd (change directory) to anywhere else on your own. In that case, use ls (list directory contents) and pwd (print working directory) to find out where you really are, and whether the file is in the directory you're now in. |

livecd gentoo # exit
exit
livecd gentoo # pwd
/mnt/gentoo
livecd gentoo # mv metalog-0.8_pre20031130.tar.gz /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles
livecd gentoo #
##############################################################
This means it worked, right? If so, I am ready to proceed to?:
Code: | # rc-update add metalog default |

Most likely yes.
But I would search for the file in the distfiles directory just to be sure. The following command will tell you for sure:
Code: | ls /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles | grep metalog |
Note that the horizontal bar character between "distfiles" and "grep" is entered by pressing SHIFT + \ (backslash).

I got a negative response:
Code: | ls: /mnt/gentoo/portage/distfiles: No such file or directory |
Did I move it wrong? |

Whoops, MY FAULT...
It should be Code: | ls /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles |grep metalog |
Note the usr between "gentoo/" and "/portage". |

You need to chroot back into the installation. Do this:
Code: | chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash |
