Hi!

I created a "Gentoo Linux Users Everywhere" team for zetagrid.

What is ZetaGrid?
ZetaGrid is an open source and platform independent grid system that uses idle CPU cycles from participating computers. It can be used for any CPU intensive application which can be split into many separate steps and which would run very long on a single computer. ZetaGrid can be run as a low-priority background process on various platforms like Windows, AIX, Linux for zSeries, Linux on Intel. On Windows systems it may also be run in screen saver mode.

The current project zetagrid is used for is this one:
The verification of Riemann's Hypothesis is considered to be one of modern mathematic's most important problems.
This implementation involves about 2500 workstations and has a peak performance rate of about 530 GFLOPS. About 2 billions of zeros for the zeta function are calculated every day.

Zetagrid can be found at www.zetagrid.net

It would be great i many of you would use it and join our team!
Installation is simple: Get the files from the homepage, unpack them, make sure you have java installed and edit the config file (zeta.config).
Include you name, your e-mail and set the team to "Gentoo Linux Users Everywhere". After the completion of your first work unit you'll receive a e-mail for confirmation of joining the team.

I forgot something very important: If Riemann's Hypothesis can be prooved by zetagrid, the top 100 users will be rewarded according on how many work units they completed!

Greetings
Tantive

n.b.: If you have a athlon cpu, please use the 20% memory option as it seems to be faster as the 40% one.

I think there is no need for an ebuild, once installed zetagrid will keep itself up to date.
The only thing an ebuild could do is unpacking these two archives in a directory (e.g. /opt/zetagrid) as the zetagrid executable will check for updated versions and projects automatically (and install them):
http://www.zetagrid.net/zeta/zeta_base.zip
http://www.zetagrid.net/zeta/linux/zeta_linux_x86.zip

Here is a startup and a progress script for it:
http://www.zetagrid.net/zeta/linux/zeta.sh
http://www.zetagrid.net/zeta/linux/zeta_progress.sh

A very nice progress app can be found here:
http://www.zetagrid.net/zeta/add-ons/zeta_progress.zip
Start it with: java -cp zeta_progress.jar zeta.JShowProgress

Just to clarify some things as some users are scared by the auto-update:

Technical details:
ZetaGrid provides a secure Java kernel, which does not allow access from outside, and secures its communications and activities by restricted layer access with digital signatures (ElGamal public-key encryption) and key establishment protocols (half-certified Diffie-Hellman and ElGamal key agreement). The keys have a length of 1024 Bit. The framework of ZetaGrid provides management capabilities and is easy to use. Furthermore, it supports different platforms and provides stability.

So i think it is much saver then other distributed computing projects.

It's there! :-)

We now offer a zetagrid ebuild to our community!
It's located in app-sci/zetagrid and is ~masked.

Have fun and enjoy gentoo!

As i checked the ebuild into portage 15 mins ago i think that not all rsync servers catched up with it.
Just give them a little bit time (up to 30 mins)...
...and remember that the ebuild is masked, to merge it chdir into /usr/portage/app-sci/zetagrid and do a "ebuild zetagrid-1.0.ebuild merge".

It's crunching happily away now, but how do I join the team? Or let alone that, how do I even register as an individual? I've edited zeta.cfg like I'm supposed to, but that didn't make me appear on any lists at the website. 8O

Edit zeta.cfg and complete your first workunit. You will be registered then and automatically join the team you enteredin zeta.cfg.

Yes, I realised that when I woke up this morning. :) Just out of curiosity, do you think the Linux client would run on a Macintosh (w/ Gentoo, of course)? It is Java, after all, but you left it masked in ~PPC...

By the way, since the prizes are given to individuals, not teams, why don't we all participate as one individual and try to win $1,000,000 (or $1,000, as the case may be) for Gentoo? I'm running SETI@home right now, but the monetary incentive, as well as the possibility of getting the last word on the Riemann Hypothesis (which, while I don't understand, I've heard of enough times to know that it must be really, really important.)

plate: I added ~alpha ~sparc ~ppc to the ebuild as i think it run's on theses archs, too.
Carlos: This may be a good idea! I'd ask drobbins about it :-)

Just a note, the zeta.sh script has some setting you need to set if you intend to connect through a proxy server (I have to, and I was wondering why nothing happened).

Well, for some reason it doesn't on PPC. I unmasked it myself and did a test run, but there's a library in there that makes it choke... :( This is what happens during emerge:
Code:
strip:
/var/tmp/zetagrid-1.0/image/opt/zetagrid/libcrypt.so
strip: Warning: Output file cannot represent architecture UNKNOWN!

And when you start the shell script, zetagrid dies with this error:
Code:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /opt/zetagrid/libcrypto2.so: ELF file data encoding not big-endian

Ok, I removed ~ppc, ~sparc and ~alpha as zetagrid is written in java, but uses binaries for the calculations.
Removed ~ on x86.

Have a look into nohup.out
You should see the client working.
Or just exec zeta_progress.sh --> you should see your progress.

After the completion of your first work unit you should show up in the stats in www.zetagrid.net (and receive a mail with the activation link for your membership in our team),

You have to be in /opt/zetagrid when executing that command.

I created a FAQ at http://cvs.gentoo.org/~tantive
Please change your settings to

name=Michael Imhof
eMail=tantive@gentoo.org
team=Gentoo Linux Users Everywhere

as we are trying to win some money as single user!
All won money will be used for gentoo only!
