hi,

i just installed distcc on a computer in my house network which will be used as file/webserver. The CPU is a Intel Katmai PII 450, System is equipped with 396mb ram.

My main rig is a 1gb, shuttle sn41g2 with a 3200 amd Barton.

The small fileserver is using the main rig to compile stuff, his distcc/hosts configuration is as:
Code:

192.168.0.4/3  (Main rig)
localhost/1 (fileserver)

this seems to work well, and the main rig compiles for the small one.

now i wonder if the fileserver could probably also help the main rig in compiling. thinking about how long an openoffice compile or Xserver compile takes this could bring in some benefits.
but what would be the best hosts config on the main rig? at the end i dont think that compiling small to middle large stuff will bring any benefit in distributing the load also on the small one, more it may even hamper the speed as the main rig could have to wait for the small.

does someone has ideas, or hints how to optimize ?

thanks in advance,
nirax

There will not be a significant benefit of adding a 450MHz + network communication to a 3200+ system.
Since quite a bit of network traffic is involved the added processing may well be lost in the overhead...

hm yes, but i wonder if there is not a delta where it could become reliable again. at least i think i will make a test on emerging Xorg.
what could be good hosts settings for that?

Code:

localhost/3 (main, barton)
192.168.0.4/1 (fileserver 450mhz)

maybe?
or /4 and /1 ?

also is there a possibility to add a causality distribute compile ?
like: if ebuild source download size exceeds 10mb than distcc will be used, else localhost for all ??

Just your luck - X doesn't distribute... :(
