Howdy folks -
I have a dell poweredge 2250 with a 34gig scsi drive. A few months ago this box started to exhibit some very odd problems.
The first thing noticed is that when an emerge --sync is started, it pauses about 30 seconds in and then refuses to update any files after complaining that the filesystem is read-only.
This puts the box into a state where only parts of the disc are readable. I lose the reboot command, cat, top, etc. At this point, all I can do is physically reboot the box. Other actions can cause the machine to do this as well. A find command for instance. It seems to be anything hd intensive.
I have been able to install smartmontools, yet when I run the initial smartctl -i /dev/sda, it spits out.
Code: | smartctl version 5.30 Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/
Device: DELL PERCRAID Volume Version: V1.0
scsiModePageOffset: response length too short, resp_len=4 offset=4 bd_len=0
>> Terminate command early due to bad response to IEC mode page
A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options. |
My kernel is 2.6.8, my scsi driver has been updated. I'm at a complete loss. I'm frustrated that I can't update my machine by emerging, and that any heavy IO causes random failures.
Any suggestions are greatly welcome! _________________ Howdy Howdy |

The confusing bit is a reboot bring is back up to normal, until heavy IO once again takes it down. I hear no strange noises, and I can't confirm with smartctl.
Tomorrow I"m going to put the drive into another computer with a different controller and see if I can begin doing updates, etc. Hopefully that will narrow down the issue. _________________ Howdy Howdy |
