Hopefully this is a quickie..
Just emerged KDE. Rebooted am able to launch KDE manually... but I don't know how to get KDE to launch automatically when the system starts up. I have been looking around and found mention of .xinitrc... but I cannot find this file anywhere on my system...

It's al about this portin of rc.conf: ( I couldn't leave you like that, sorry) I use gdm (gnome display manager- it's purty) to boot into kde. Set it how you wish.
Code: | # What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm | entrance ]
DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"
# XSESSION is a new variable to control what window manager to start
# default with X if run with xdm, startx or xinit. The default behavior
# is to look in /etc/X11/Sessions/ and run the script in matching the
# value that XSESSION is set to. The support scripts is smart enouth to
# look in all bin directories if it cant find a match in /etc/X11/Sessions/,
# so setting it to "enligtenment" can also work. This is basically used
# as a way for the system admin to configure a default system wide WM,
# allthough it will work if the user export XSESSION in his .bash_profile, etc.
#
# NOTE: 1) this behaviour is overridden when a ~/.xinitrc exists, and startx
# is called.
# 2) even if a ~/.xsession exist, if XSESSION can be resolved, it will
# be executed rather than ~/.xsession, else KDM breaks ...
#
# Defaults depending on what you install currently include:
#
# Gnome - will start gnome-session
# kde-<version> - will start startkde (ex: kde-3.0.2)
# Xsession - will start a terminal and a few other nice apps
XSESSION="kde-3.3.2"

LOL - Well I greatly appreciate your time. That did it. I noticed thought that I still see the old X login screen... then KDE launches after that. Gnome had it's own customized login screen... does KDE have one too? One that looks better than the plain X login window?
Thanks again. Don't get sober bud! Have a couple on me! _________________ - Schooner

All you ever wanted to know about automatically starting KDE and more can be found here.

Login through teh GUI. If you wanted to directly get to KDE, I think there's a setting in gdm that allows you to do that. _________________ Sincerly,

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll have to try it after emerge is done with openoffice... could be a little while.
I think that I have found a good way to get a noob user a quick, easy and reliable installation though. Basically, I started with VidaLinux. I used the Anaconda install to get my base system installed. I didn't install any of the optional components (gnome, pppoe, etc). First thing when I got my system up I emerged KDE and porthole. Then I did a system wide update. I know some people say that porthole is unstable... but I haven't had any problems with it. But then again, I still have noob under my username... don't I...
The install was easy and fast, my network card worked right away with no finangling, plus I am emerging in all additional components so there's no worry about slow bin installations... it's been beautiful. It's running smooth and looks great.
I can't wait to begin exploring KDE and Gentoo more. I love porthole... emerging in software is slow but easy.
Basically, aside from the little issue I had here with getting my GUI up automatically (which has been easily resolved), life is good.
Thanks again. _________________ - Schooner
