Dual Monitors with two different cards

I couldn't find help on my topic since most topics I searched dealt with dual monitors on one card only. I have an ati radeon aiw 9700 (older version with one DVI only) and a 3dfx voodoo3 (VGA). How would I go about implementing dual monitors? I don't even know where to start.


and what the heck is xorg and why's it important? sorry, that was a supreme n00b question, but I had to ask it.

Well, I'll answer your second question at least (since I too was unable to get 2 different cards up and running, but I wasn't industrious enough to follow the whole process through).

In short, Xorg is the underlying system in the X Windows system, which is a branch of the original XFree86 windows system. It provides many graphics libraries and other required parts which help enable windows and other similar GUI objects to be displayed on the screen, and also includes font and opengl support, just to name a few things. I'm sure someone can give a much longer dissertation on the subject, but I thought I could mention this.

The config should be essentially the same, but insert xorg in place of xf86 in most spots =).

I first installed gentoo with the 2004.3 universal cd, how would I know whether I have xorg or xfree?

edit: I'm gussing its xorg judging from this post, right?

any xorg files your using Xorg-x11
else
your using xfree

If /etc/X11/xorg.conf exists, yes. Similar deduction can be done by using 'X -version'.

I just wanna let you know that it worked. I was using xorg, yeah, but it still works. I turned off Xinerama because it looks butt-ugly and it tries to stretch everything lengthwise.

hmmm might be time to get that 3rd monitor screen up and running (2 is way cool)
no having to swap between screens (looking at 1 at a time)
