I was trying to install the latest version of the ati-drivers, ie. the new ones just released by ati that support X.org 6.8, however I have a problem with the ebuilds.

ati-drivers-8.8.25-r3 says it needs >= opengl-update-2.1_pre1 and
opengl-update-2.1_pre1 says it can't be installed with ati-drivers-8.8.25-r3 or X.org.6.8

Any ideas?

I followed the tip about unmerging and emerging the ati-drivers and opengl.

Worked nicely indeed, however the ati-drivers refused at first. Since I had that same problem before, I knew how to enter the ebuild and reduce (KV_FULL) to just (KV). A solution found in another thread about ATi problems.

Saved and exited.

Now I am back in business

It didn't worked for me. After unmerging ati-drivers and opengl-update, portage refuses to merge the new opengl-update (pre4). It says xorg 6.8 blocks it. But I don't have 6.8 installed at all (only 6.7)!!

Any help?

Cheers,

those things can't be installed with anything less than those specific versions not greater than or equal to.

ati-drivers 8.8.25.r3
opengl-update 2.1_pre4

Kernel geentoo-dev-sources 2.6.10-gentoo-r6

The above mentioned fix by keiss worked for me...

What I noticed when unmerging ati-drivers is that both ati-drivers-3.14.6 & ati-drivers-8.8.25-r1 were both being unmerged.... I think that this was probably causing the issue since the new version of ati-drivers wants to be installed in its own slot, and there was dependency issues with both versions being installed.
