Dont understand ... you should just be logged in as 'root' (no password), what stage are you at and what's the proble/error?? _________________ Someone told me that "..they only ever made one mistake...."

step 20 was to change the root pwd
if your read this
last statement of stage 1
"Once this process completes, your system will be equivalent to a "stage2" system, which means you can skip the rest of the stage installs, and move onto final installation.
"
and jump over stage 2 and 3 (emerge system)
you just do not install the shadow tools => you cant change the password in the shadow since passwd is part of the shadow tools

I simply did `emerge -u system` at that point and everything got back to normal, passwd is not the only thing that was missing, some other utilities were also not there.

I would think that once you progressed from a stage 1 to a stage 2 you would still have to take the necessary steps to move to a stage 3 system. At least that was the way 1.4rc1 was installed. I'm not a guru in any fashion but could the install guide be off ? Perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge could shed some light on this. _________________ There are no facts...
