Well I just set-up ALSA using the ALSA guide provided by Gentoo, but for some reason the sound is only coming out of one speaker. Any ideas?

i think i also ran into this problem some time ago, and solved it by running alsamixer to unmute the channels... check it out.

I unmuted the ones specified in the guide. Which ones did you unmute in addition to those?

i guess you have a 2 speaker system. well, in my case i had a 5.1 and now that i remember it well, the problem wasn't that sound was comming only from one side, it was that the sound was only comming from the front! your problem is a little strange, because i don't think you have to unmute different channels for stereo to work (since the L and R are in each channel). but still, try putting some sound playing and experiment by unmuting all the channels in alsamixer.

run alsamixer, and crank up all the volume channels. if you dont have alsamixer, emerge alsa-utils.

make sure the left channel isn't set to like 2% and your right channel set to 50%... make sure they are both the same so as you have left sound as well as right in the alsamixer.

cheers

I've currently got a similar problem, but I'm only using OSS, and it isn't a mixer issue. The left and right controls in the gnome mixer both seem to control sound coming out of the right speaker. It seems like both the left and right channels are being sent to the right channel.

And it ain't the cable or speakers, they work fine with other equipment (like my CD player).

Yea, I don't know exactly how I fixed my issue but I did. I ran into a later problem where my sound just did not work at all. So I completely removed ALSA, leaving no residual files such as configuration files and what not. Then I reinstalled ALSA and everything is fine and dandy now.

You might want to give that a shot. You're using OSS though.... so I can't really help you there. Checking your sound levels, and whether or not channels are muted are always worth checking though.

Well.... I can get sound out of both speakers, when playing CD audio.

Since CD audio is piped direct to the soundcard via a nice cable, this leads me to believe that something is seriously broke in either the emu10k1 module or OSS.

What kernel are you using?

If 2.6, did you compile it in?

EMU10K1 works fine on my PC.... except for making my subwoofer sounding like light thuds... or maybe its ALSA, I don't know, it sucks though, but other than my pussy subwoofer, it works fine.

BTW, do you know how to get a subwoofer thumpin' like it should, like it does when I'm on Windows?
