I'm getting
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
This is the first boot after installation. What init= option am I supposed to
give to the kernel and how is this done?

Check your grub.conf or lilo.conf and see if the file specified on the initrd line actually exists. If it does not exist, you'll probably want to create it with mkinitrd.
