|
|
I'm quite new to Linux and (obviously) gentoo, but I'm quite interested in game development. Gaming is quite established on Windows and it's made easy because of DirectX.
I was just wondering if there are a set of libraries for Linux game (and other multimedia) development and if not would it be sensible to start such a project? |

Linuxland has OpenGL.
Besides, WineHQ just started to intergrate the DirectX API (if you don't want to wait for that, there is Cedega).

SDL is pretty good, it provides most of the functions you expect from DirectX except Direct3D. 3D stuff is handled by OpenGL. |

SDL's pretty good, but be forewarned that it does add a bit of a performance overhead. It's probably faster to write your own OpenGL display routines, use X to handle input and use ALSA (or OSS if you want to be annoying) for sound output. _________________ Registered Linux User #263260 |
