Hey,
First I want to say that gentoo is awsome. I switched from fedora core a month ago or so, and i havent looked back. It is a bit more of a pain to get everything working though.
I have a brand new asus m5n centrino laptop. It uses the 855gm graphics chipset. Im trying to get hardware graphics acceleration to work. I have the 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 kernel. I have agpgart and intel-agp built as modules, and drm support.
When I try to start x after loading the i830 module, I get a black screen with a little x shaped cursor thing, and then this little white box shows up near the middle of the screen. It changes shape a little if i press a lot of keys. ctr-alt-backspace and ctr-alt-delete dont work. If i press the power button, the box gets a little more filled out (normally its kind of a bunch of lines in a box shape) and in a few seconds the computer shuts down.
Loading X works just fine without the i830 module, but dri support is not enabled
EDIT: xorg logs
Code: | arthur #grep EE /var/log/Xorg.8.log
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) I810(0): I830 Dma Initialization Failed
(EE) I810(0): [drm] Failed to initialized agp heap manager |

Hope this helps:

You probably needs to enable
this option in your kernel configuration:
Code: |
<M> Intel 810/815 support (EXPERIMENTAL)
<M> Intel 830M/845G/852GM/855GM/865G support (EXPERIMENTAL) |
And the dirver should be "i810", X server will launch i830 or i915(i.e your case) for you. |
