Is the Gentoo kernel actually any good? I've always used it, never even tried anything else. How does it compare to other kernels? What other kernels are available and how good are they?

No, it's absolute rubbish - that's probably why so many people keep using it ;-)

Any of the kernel sources listed there can be counted upon to work, but there are (larger or smaller) differences between them, in included patches, optimisations, weird hardware support, or just one developers' personal preferences.
