|
|
To begin with, I have read "The KDE Split Ebuilds HOWTO".
My current install consists of the 'monolithic' KDE 3.3.2, all of the old packages that were in portage before splitting was implemented. My question is, when KDE 3.4 Final is released, how would I then upgrade while being able to select only the individual apps I want? Would I have to completely unmerge all the KDE 3.3.2 packages, losing all of my customizations and configurations?
For clarity I'll restate. I want to upgrade to KDE 3.4 when it is available, having only the selected apps I want installed. Will this be a difficult transisition from the 'old' full install of KDE 3.3.2? If not, how exactly can I do this, and can I be assured I won't lose my settings/configurations/customizations?
Thanks for your insight! |

your settings are anyway in ~/.kde and will not be touched by the splitted ebuilds.
cheers

So I can safely assume that if I unmerge KDE 3.3.2 ALL the settings will remain in ~/.kde3.3/? What about all the other files, like wallpapers, etc that reside in /usr/kde/share/*, would those get wiped out completely? |

/usr/kde/share/: depends if they where installed by portage. you should anyway not copy the wallpapers into /usr (usr stands for unix system ressources).

Hmm. So would a good strategy be to emerge KDE 3.4 and the apps I want along side of 3.3.2? Then copy all my settings and files over as needed? Is this possible? Also, is there a better solution?
Thanks for your input so far steveb. |

Thanks for your input so far steveb. | KDE 3.4 installs anyway in a differend slot then the 3.3 series. You can have both installed in Gentoo at the same time

Then I guess that is my solution unless anyone else here can prove otherwise.
Cheers SteveB. |
