Hello.

I've got a new computer, so I'm going to reinstall Gentoo in it. But, I hear that 2005.0 is just around the corner!
What are the pros and cons of waiting for 2005.0 or installing right now with 2004.3-r1? I'm doing a stage 1 install.

Thanks for reading

I'd also like to know how soon Gentoo 2005.0 will be out. However I'd just go for it and install it now. I doubt it's going to be tomorrow or anything and at the rate computers age keeping an idle box with no power/software should be a crime

Plus I thought you could always keep everything up to date with gentoo, I'm sure someone will make a guide on how to upgrade to whatever major changes there will be.

Well, it doesn't really matter! You'll be up-to-date after your first "emerge sync" and "emerge -uD world" , regardless of the install version used. Welcome to the Gentoo world...

well, I'm aware of emerge. But I heard of a different kernel profile in 2005.0. I also heard about the existance of an installer... could it be included in 2005.0?

Kernel usage is entirely up to you. 2004.X vs 2005.0 won't matter.

The installer is just a GUI for the process that already exists. Nothing too special about it, IMO.

Why can't you wait? An emerge -uD world does the same thing, you don't need to wait until 2005 version is released. If you update your portage tree and execute emerge -uD world you will have the same packages like the new gentoo 2005 livecd
